Scipio's Dream: Cello (The Pathways Program)

Andy Shin, age sixteen, is a sophomore at Beaverton Academy of Science and
Engineering. At age nine, he began his journey with the cello and has been studying
with Maria Shim. Andy has been a dedicated member of the Portland Youth
Philharmonic (PYP) Organization and has served as Co-Principal cellist in both the
Portland Youth Philharmonic and Camerata PYP since 2023.

As an active soloist, Andy has made many significant achievements. Most recently, he
won the 2024-25 PYP Concerto Competition and performed the Elgar Cello Concerto in
its entirety with the Portland Youth Philharmonic. He has also had the opportunity to
play concertos with orchestras, including members of the Oregon Symphony,
the Eugene Symphony, the Jewish Community Orchestra, and the Willamette Falls
Symphony Orchestra, as a result of winning numerous young artist competitions such
as the 2023 MetroArts Young Artist Debut! Competition, the 2024 Jewish Community
Orchestra Young Artist Competition, the 2024 Willamette Falls Symphony Young Artists
Competition, and winning second place in the 2023 Eugene Symphony Guild Young
Artists Competition. Andy was also the 2024 OSAA/OMEA state solo music
championship winner and was titled Oregon’s 2024 cello state champion. In addition,
his quartet also placed first in the 2024 OSAA/OMEA state chamber ensemble contest.
Andy has also earned second place in the 2023 American Protégé International
Competition, won the 2022 Baroque Festival, and was a finalist in the 2022 Oregon
Mozart Player Soloist Competition. In the spring of 2025, he was honored with the
Monday Musical Club of Portland’s Instrumental Scholarship.

In 2022, Andy was selected to perform at the ASTA National Conference masterclass.
He has also performed in masterclasses with guest artists such as Peter Prosser, Ben
Hong, Joshua Roman, David Ying, Ian Swensen, Weicong Zhang, Raúl Gómez-Rojas,
Ken Finch, Seth Biagini, and Ted Nelson. He has been featured by All Classical
Portland radio station’s “On Deck With Young Musicians” program.

His passion for music extends beyond solo performances; In 2023, Andy was selected
for the 2023 OrpheusPDX pathway program and performed Mozart’s “The Royal
Shepherd” (Il Re Pastore) as a member of the OrpheusPDX company, and the following
summer, Andy participated in the 2024 Bowdoin International Music Festival and
studied with Jeffrey Zeigler. This Summer, Andy has also been selected to participate in
the 2025 National Symphony Orchestra Summer Music Institute at the Kennedy Center
in Washington, D.C.

Andy was also selected to participate in the 2023 OrpheusPDX pathway program and
performed Mozart’s “The Royal Shepherd” (Il Re Pastore) in the summer of 2023 as a
member of the OrpheusPDX company. In the summer of 2024, Andy participated in the
2024 Bowdoin International Music Festival and studied with Jeffrey Zeigler, cello
professor at Mannes School of Music. Andy has also been selected to participate in the
2025 National Symphony Orchestra Summer Music Institute at the Kennedy Center in
Washington, D.C this summer.

Andy is an extremely passionate cellist who enjoys spreading happiness through
classical music and sharing his music with the community. In his free time, Andy enjoys
