Carin Miller

Scipio's Dream: Principal Bassoon
Carin Miller is principal bassoon with the Oregon Symphony, and previously held principal bassoon positions with the Jacksonville and Shreveport Symphonies. Ms. Miller has performed recently as guest principal bassoon with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Detroit Symphony Orchestra and St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, as well as the Oregon Bach Festival, Grant Park Festival Orchestra, Portland Opera and Oregon Ballet Theater, and has toured as guest principal bassoon with the Galilee Chamber Orchestra performing in Tel Aviv, Toronto, and New York City’s Carnegie Hall.
As a chamber musician Ms. Miller has enjoyed collaborating with the Seattle Chamber Music Society and Orca Concert series, as well as performing regularly with Chamber Music Northwest, Chatter PDX, Friends of Chamber Music, Third Angle New Music Ensemble, Classical up Close, and 45th Parallel Universe. A native of Queens, NY, Ms. Miller holds a BM from the Juilliard School, an MM from Rice University, and an Advanced Certificate from the University of Southern California. Her teachers include Whitney Crockett, Frank Morelli, Stephen Maxym, and Benjamin Kamins.
A passionate educator, Ms. Miller has served as faculty for the National Youth Orchestra, Sarasota Music Festival, Brevard Music Festival, and the Domaine Forget International Music Festival. She is the founder and director of the international symposium Bassoons Without Borders, and has served on the board of the Portland Youth Philharmonic as well as judge and advisor for The Meg Quigley Competition for cis and trans women and the International Double Reed Society Gillet Competition. Ms. Miller had the great privilege of acting for a year as visiting Adjunct Associate Professor of Bassoon at Indiana University, and has presented masterclasses for the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory, as well as participating as the featured artist for McGill Bassoon Day in Montreal. In Oregon, she coaches for the Portland Youth Philharmonic, Metropolitan Youth Symphony and Wallowa Lake Woodwind Camp, and is Adjunct Professor at Oregon State University, Portland State University, and Reed College, as well as curating a private teaching studio from her home in Portland, Oregon. She enjoys hiking and backpacking the Pacific Northwest with her partner David and son Elias.
